I believe that whatever you spend more time wanting, you'll just want more. So if you spend time indulging in a desire, it doesn't go away, it gets bigger. If you like to go shopping, then you'll want to spend more of your free time shopping and buying. You won't reach a point at which you'll say "I've had enough sex", or "I have enough junk". You feed a desire, it grows.

Another problem is the "smash the other cheek" mentality. That doesn't end the conflict. It makes things worse. Then the person who's cheek got smashed pulls out a .45 and blows off your head. Then your posse kills 3 members of his posse. This isn't good.

I'm personally more of a Confucian. But I suppose to each his own.

I agree with you, however. Desire is like a fire. Indulge in it, and the fire grows stronger, demanding more and more fuel. The answer? Extinguish the fire... Nirvana...
