Well, yeah, you can control it to a degree, but the more you feed a desire, be it money, sex, or power, you'll develop a taste for it. You'll begin to savor the idea of more of it. It's part of why people who win the lottery end up in trouble (not all of them, but a good number). They can have anything they want. If they want a car, they go buy one. Bigger house, go get one. So they indulge every desire they have, or that their kids have. And it will never be enough. Plus they'll spend so much extra time worrying about keeping it.
