If you feel sad when they mention it then you are picking up on some foreshadowing that not everyone sees during the first playthrough. Good job.
I didnt really c Zanarkand as a sad place, ever, even as the story panned out, but i can understand how a person can feel that way, especialy towards the ending.

Yup, zanarkand makes me feel sad, even when its mentioned in RL; but thats mainly because it makes me nostalgic for the time I spent playing FFX.
