One possibility is that you're referring to the events in the Tomb of the Unknown King. The place is a maze, a sort of a puzzle--and you have to follow certain steps in order to complete it. When you do, you acquire the Brothers--and their Defend ability is definitely the most powerful defensive ability in the game.
I have another answer, that's pretty much on the same level, but 'ultimate protection' is fairly subjective, so this one's first.
