Even the best meteorologists will admit that they don't know what is normal for this planet. One of the problems is that there's a lot of guesswork based around how the planet is operating now. You've got to take into account other factors, such as tectonic plate placement, sun activity, position of orbit etc. etc. Heck, we even underestimated the actual age of the Earth by a few billion years, so who knows what's "normal". Besides which, you go back far enough and we were a rapidly cooling ball of magma supposedly.
