I think its more that neither game is very original than the main characters were seperated at birth.

Quick everyone disperse! Wait, what was this thread about again? Oh yeah...I think Square did that on purpose, because they wanted you to see the simliarities with the characters. Often times authors in books will give characters names that pertain to another character just to show the comparrison.
