What the hell is the problem with different cultures having their own unique spelling variations? American English and UK English have evolved separately over number of centuries. What do we possibly gain by deciding that everyone should be exactly the same?
US English was 'cleaned up' a couple of hundred years ago, and letters deemed unnecessary were cut from a number of words. Hence Marlboro and Pittsburgh instead of Marlborough and Pittsborough, as well as everything already mentioned in this thread. But erroneous spellings like "one" (which bears no resemblance to how it's actually proncounced) were retained.
Neither system is better, neither system is right, they are simply different, and people should just accept that instead of whining about how everyone should be like them because their own country's got the most nuclear weapons, or whatever.

I don't know about everyone else in this thread, but I actually find it pretty fun debating this sort of thing, and only really do it in a light hearted manner. I don't think anyone is going overboard with anything.

Yeah, really. I always used to make fun of Bleys for the "lieutenant" pronunciation.Originally Posted by Loony BoB

But really I don't think this needs to be hostile at all, just some playful, psychotic ranting.
Boldly go.
Yeah....so long as it doesn't get too bad, I can't see this being too horrible thing.

This thread is hilarious.
I like Kung-Fu.
Чорнобйл or Чернобыль?
Чернобыль for me, even though it is slightly harder to spell than Чорнобйл.
Money, power, sex... and elephants.

Why is it again that Americans are stereotypically seen as idiots?
The same reason the British and Canadians are?
I like Kung-Fu.
Yes, we're so dumb that we have to steal other nation's languages, take out letters because they make words too hard to spell, then arrogantly claim our versions are superior with no actual basis for such claims.
USA! USA! USA!
It those arrogant bastards that saved your asses in WWI and WWII
