I'm rubbish at Russian, so I'm guessing that it's probably pronounced in English with the emphasis on the быль whereas in Russian it's pronounced with the emphasis on a different syllable.
Kinda like Борис. In English it's pronounced Boris, in Russian it's pronounced like Barees.

In Russian I believe that the emphasis is on the но, but I could be wrong as I don't do much Russian speaking anymore. Where the emphasis lies doesn't really make the letters sound different though, but the ь is like an <i>e</i> at the end of a word in English. It's silent, but it changes the sound of the syllable preceeding it. The ь changes the consonant preceeding it from hard to soft.
However, after looking it up, it seems like both versions of the word have a ь, so it just shows how terrible my Russian spelling is.
