I've met several friends from online before (I even went to a wedding for two of 'em! <3 ) and avoided even more during Otakon a couple years back.
The thing about meeting people from online is that you have to want to in the first place. It's not about a fear of ass-rape or anything; it's having to put up with Weasley in person rather than blocking him on AIM. It's much easier to do the latter.
