It CAN be mistaken as something else as they both look extremely similar, but they are not the same thing.
The object is inanimate, and the answer itself is not hard to spot. You just wouldn't know the name of it by looking at it. You have to search for the answer's name. Also the what I could be and what I am not are the same thing, it's what you may think is it's twin. But they are not the same thing.
I'll figure it out later...
I think I've guessed the answer, but I don't want to spoil everyone else's fun in guessing it. It's a beauty, though, and took all my skill to divulge it!

New hint : The link between the golden (think hard), is not physical, that is what is meant by no direct encounter made. The answer is nothing to do with the Golden, but the golden can help you know what you're looking for.
