New hint : The link between the golden (think hard), is not physical, that is what is meant by no direct encounter made. The answer is nothing to do with the Golden, but the golden can help you know what you're looking for.
Cloud is definitely not it because you know his name. And the guy who sells GP doesn't have a name so not him, also this thing is ALWAYS there, just you wouldn't know what it is by looking at it.

at first thought i thought (mm thought thought) that it's might be a monster, and that the "golden" was sense materia that let you know it's name when giving information. but then i read the inanimate bit and thought nope
unless it's the gargoyle monsters in northern cave that are stone at first but become "real" after an attack
