Initially is all we know (Well, yeah)
But an expert testifies (Tifa, who knew him as a child explains his past)
To Hypnos' dominion (Whilst he is 'asleep' in Mideel)
Alternatively the expert could be the voice in Cloud's head while he's asleep in Junon.
