Garland made zidane and was going to make him more powerful then Kuja to take over his place. Garland told Kuja to train him but Kuja got jealous, he didn't know that he was going to die so he just thought that Zidane was going to kill him or something, and dropped Zidane out on some random place then Tatulas (can't spell real good) found him. Then the rest is in the game.
Not to go off topic or anything, but does anyone know if this is the same Garland from FF I?

Evil geniuses seldom think logically. If they did, who knows what may happen.
Anyway, back on topic. (SPOILER)Garland saw that he didn't need to create a war, the people of Gaia were more than capable of that themselves, he just needed Kuja to initiate things. Zidane was to be Kuja's replacement as time went progressed.
