I'm going to take a wild guess here and say the guado. (a character, many different characters, and an event).

Nigh fell in the great deed, (The affects of Seymour caused the race to fall, it was also this time Yuna and guardians deverged from Yevon teachings)
Lost, not alone." (The race fell, but so did the Ronso and summoners after Sin was destroyed.

My other guess was Bevelle, but it is not a character...

could it be when tidus was sent to the farplane and was lost but not alone and almost died for real but since yuna believed in him he survived so maybe it was tidus sacrificing himself

or maybe before the events of X, and it is talking about when the Crusaders fought before. The Crusaders were around and trying to defeat Sin for a long time. Crusaders fighting sin fthroughout histroy.

I'm at a loss, but will probably kick myself when someone finally gets the answer. Hope neither of these are characters if they are sorry. Someone get this, anyone!

All wrong so far. The event im talking about is very big, and could easily be considered a great deed.

The summoners and guardians who died on Gagazet trying to obtain the final summon?

Master of history- The final summoning in itself is historical, summoners have journeyed to obtain it for a very long time, dating back to Yunalesca

Lord of naught- They never did obtain the summoning as they died on Gagazet

Nigh fell in the great deed- They were extremely close to Zanarkand, but ultimately could not make it

Lost, not alone- Yuna and party encountered several graves marking the deaths of several summoner/guardian parties, so they are not alone
