Each sorceress holds a piece of the Great Hyne. If time were to compress, then all of the pieces of the Great Hyne would exist in the same moment in time. Ultimecia could then kill every sorceress and take their power, thus recombining the Great Hyne in herself and obtaining that power for herself. That's what I think her reasons are at least.

Ultimecia wanna to take the power,body and mind of all the sorceresses to become Sorceress Adel.
Hyne doesn´t need time compression to do that.He needs Time Compression to deceive the persons of his time when Ellone send their counsciousness to the past.
He could as well just time travel and aplly the amalgament magic on all the sorceresses and knights.That would be more easy.(And he has made it on another universe of time).
However,Ellone´s interference forced him to compress time.That way,no one would think for example that Rinoa and Edea would turn into Adel along with Ulti(this one would be even more stupid since she was suposed to live on the future).

Hyne decided to compress time after Ellone sent people´s consciousness to Ulti´s time(further on the past).He knows that Elle being emotionally attached to the other sorceresses and knights would also try to send people´s counsciousness to their eras as well.
But Hyne anticipated her performing Time Compression and changed the events so that people would see it differently.
Of course you would ask why didn´t Rinoa(the True Ellone) tells us this.
Hyne possessed Caraway and turned his house into a device which would make people inside loose memory(when locked on a special way).
That´s why he wanna Rinoa to be locked there.
But Rinoa was sided with Laguna to overturn Hyne´s plans.
Which means she didn´t forget anything but pretends so to deceive Hyne.
However Hyne still see Rinoa as a potencial danger.
He tried to get a hold of a cyborg which imitates Ellone´s powers and physical appearance.
Of course he will use this to replace Ellone and confuses people.
He thinks Rinoa forget about her ability.

Ignoring Futures rambling lunacy, Ultimecias most obvious motives have been touched upon already here.

Firstly, power. Compressing time would allow her to become the new Hyne, and not only that, she'd be able to absorb all of time and space, effectively becoming God, with absolute power over the universe.

However, she clearly wasn't born 'evil' (FF8 stands against that notion with Squalls comment on good and evil). As someone pointed out, she was probably persecuted in her own time for being a sorceress. This can be taken further out by suggesting that the SeeD's of the future were waiting for Ultimecia to be born, and being fallible humans, they seeked to kill her themselves, before she could cause all that havoc in her own time as well as the past, refusing to wait for Squall to arrive from the past. So they hunted her from birth, determined to stop her, even though she, as a new-born baby, hadn't done anything wrong yet. Understandably then, Ultimecia goes very angry, and a deep resentment against SeeD and humans in general starts growing in her.
Eventually, we end up with the power-hungry sorceress we meet in the game.

I think I read this at the back of where the discs are kept whatever-you-call-it. At the back (well, at mine anyway, mine's European version) it said something about a sorceress trying to not only control the world, but to control time and space with it. Now that's what I call world domination. Except it also has time and space domination.

Ultimecia is human, and sometimes they have lots of power and cannot stop attaining more and more. Why do you think Hitler attempted to take over the world? He was on an insane power trip that caused the deaths of millions. Ultimecia doesnt need to have a reason, just like hitler...

As for Ulti giving her powers away. She gives it away to Edea while time is still compressed. Remember Squall sees this event happen before Rinoa comes and helps him escape to their own time.

You have to remember that SeeD were created to kill the sorceress, that is their purpose. And like a military, when given a job, ie to kill someone, the reasons do not matter, it is your job and you do whatever you can to complete it. And the obvious reason for Ulti is that she wanted power over everything, including time. It's really just that simple

to seek out Ellone in that current time and steal her abilities (i dont remember), so she could have control over time compression.


ovcourse its much better when the game says it.

edit: if she combined Ellones abilities with the Time Machine, she could bassically change the universe as it is... even through a single change of events.
and ovcourse, power, potent powers aswell.

edit: in fact... it would bassically make her a god, having ableness to change how things are at her will.

Where does it say about Hyne? The only game reference is that Rinoa is addressed as 'the Sorceress Rinoa, Hyne's descendant' when she is taken from the Ragnarok to the Sorceress Memorial.
