Cameron Crowe, Peter Jackson, Martin Scorsese, Baz Luhrmann, and Tim Burton.

I don't think people quite realize how much talent and genius that is required to be a great director. I admire these people like you wouldn't believe.

My favourite would have to be Hayao Miyazaki. watch any of his movies and you'll instantly fall in love with it (well i have)! This guy cannot put a foot wrong, if there was a person i would like to be like...it would be this guy

    Other people i like:

Speilberg- for jaws, e.t. and Jurassic Park 1

George Lucas- despite the sappiness of the recent prequels you gotta give it to him with the original star wars trilogy!

Quentin Tarantino- Gotta love Reservoir Dogs, my friend says pulp fiction is awesome (havent seen it yet *gasp*) and the recent kill bill v.1 and v.2

Robert Rodriguez- not exactly my fav. but after Sin City i look forward to his movies now, despite his exploration into the children genre with the spy kids sequels n all!

Bryan Singer and Sam Raimi for doing an excellent job on giving justice to comic heros turned films spiderman and the xmen! Cant wait for superman returns and spiderman 3

The Coen Brothers, and I've been watching a fair few David Lynch films lately and enjoying those too. And of course, Kevin Smith, though the last two he did weren't too stellar.

Tim Burton and Quentin Tarantino - they're absolute nutcases :D But you know, that's just a good thing when it comes to directors, you never know what you're gonna get (...Run Forrest run!) .. .. .. Right. I love Kill Bills and Pulp Fiction and Edward Scissorhands and Charlie & The Chocolate Factory :P yay ^^

Overrated? How do you rate someone if you don't actually know what their job entails? Hell, I'm a film major and I still don't understand all the intricacies of being a director. The magnitude and scope of their job is mind-blowing. They tell a story through everything from angles, perspective, framing, editing, pace, rhythm, dialogue, performance, visual design, literary design, music, and all the while having a persistence of vision that brings it all together. That's creative genius.

I think directors are vastly underrated by the average movie-goer.

A whole lot of people call Quentin Tarantino "the greatest filmmaker of all time", or "the best thing to ever happen to film." Thus, he is most definately overrated. I fail to see how making decent movies that reference great old films by much greater filmmakers makes you "the best thing to ever happen to film."

Oh, and I'm also very very familiar with what being a director entails.

Yeah, like totally. And a man who created "From Dusk Till Dawn" should NEVER be associated with the word "Greatest".

Well good for you, then I guess that means you're not an average movie-goer.

It's hard to respect anybody in any sort of artform when there is so much crap put out. That said, I'm sure a handful of directors have talent. I like Ridley Scott.
