Originally dates back to the days of WarCraft, when a map designer mispelled "Own" as "Pwn". What was originally supose to be "player has been owned." was "player has been pwned".

Pwn eventually grew from there and is now used throughout the online world, especially in online games.1. "I pwn these guys on battlenet"

2. "This strategy pwns!" or "This game pwn."

That could be wrong? Back in the days of MUDS, the ultimate spell that admins could cast was mispelled to pwn, which could be targeted at everyone on the game This was also a grammar boo-boo.

It came on a premade mud set, I think DIKU??? I cannot remember for the life of me though.

Anywho. brings back fond memories, as whn I launched a Mud using the codebase... the man pages had the command as OWN, when the command that needed to be typed was PWN ... frustration! I changed it then, now I kick myself for not trademarking the phrase
