Sony's big chance

I got to see the XBOX360 fo the first time and it wasn't compadible with any of the older xbox titles that my friend had...the Only games its compadible with at launch was Halo1,2...with this in mind what do you think is Sonys chance of sucess over Microsoft in this area? The PS3 will be compadible with the full PS1-2 library.

The Xbox 360 has to emulate old Xbox games. No, not all of the old titles will play on it at this time, but I'd say this list has considerably more than Halo 1 and 2 on it. With Xbox Live's marketplace feature, it should be easy for Microsoft to add updates for each old game; I would be surprised if, within a few months, there are more than a handful of old titles that are still incompatible. And sure, Sony says the PS3 will be completely backwards compatible, but that doesn't neccessarily mean it will happen.

Sony did a remarkable job with the PS2, which did send XBox makers crying. I played the XBox at a local store, and It blew my mind away. The graphics were VERY amazing. But I would say that Sony, might just hit it off once again and then they'll be selling a LOT of PS3s.

I heard there are only a handful of titles from PS1/2 that will won't on a PS3 so far. The only thing that'll make me get the PS3 is MGS4.

The PS2 was compatible with all PSX games, so there's so reason they wouldn't be able to make the PS3 compatilbe with what the PS2 can play.
The reason the Xbox isn't 100% backwards compatible is because they switched graphics chips to ATI, which isn't the case with PS3.

I don't deal in absolutes, but I would say that there is a very good chance that Playstation 3 will surpass the Xbox 360. Once again it all comes down to games and unless something radically different happens Playstation will continue to dominate that category.

Indeed. Microsoft has to emulate the X-Box. But from what I hear, the patches will be available on X-Box Live for free download fixes for pretty much any game that is worth their effort to patch. Just not all the patches are ready. But they're being worked on

The PS2 was compatible with all PSX games, so there's so reason they wouldn't be able to make the PS3 compatilbe with what the PS2 can play.

To clarify, there were a small number of PSX games that didn't work, or had issues being played on a PS2. Last time I saw that list was years ago though and only included about a half dozen games, all but one of which I didn't own. FFV in FF Anthology was one of those games and it only had a slight glitch in the save screen that didn't really affect saving at all.

Sony has said there will probably be some games that won't work, but they're doing there best to make as many work as possible. I'd expect the ones that don't work to mainly be unpopular titles. I doubt they'd let games that were actually good and sold well not work for it.

As for Microsofts system, it seems like a bit of a pain to me. I see no reason they couldn't have included compatibility with the full Xbox library at launch, other than rushing things to get it out for the holiday season and ahead of the competition.
