dictionary.com says... "rock is a generic term for the range of styles that evolved out of rock'n'roll." To me, that includes metal, pop, indy/emo/whatever and some other forms of music such as a single acoustic guitar.
Also, I define 'rock' as what is produced by the instruments used - it has little (if anything) to do with vocals. If someone is singing a ballad, rapping, talking or whatever, so long as it's rock music they're providing vocals to, it's still rock music. Rapping is a vocal thing, not an instrumental thing. The two should not be confused, and rap and rock should not be considered mutually exclusive.
