I didn't say you had to use Royal Guard and Nevan, I was pointing out that Nevan is LIKE Royal Guard.

You play defensively and get to a point where you can kill an enemy, or group of, very swiftly. Royal Guard is the same, you defend and then unleash, but you don't have to use both together.
I personally use Nevan and Swordmaster because the addition of a few close-range moves really extends the combo sets.

ps: Yes, I have maxed trickster and maxed Ebony and Ivory so far, some extremely useful tactics await you with lvl 3 trickster.

yeah, but if you don't use Royal Guard and use Doppel Ganger or Quicksilver, which make bosses one hell of a lot easier, then it's not much use apart from your tactics.
(yes, i do use Doppel Ganger an awful lot, along with Quicksilver. Mainly cuz i got everything else up to lvl2 and cannot be bothered waiting 99999 points for lvl 3. has anybody done that yet by the way???)
