I liked that old riddle, and contrary to what many scholars have thought, I say the answer is Death. Death is truley the one omni potent being that was at one time all of these things, and clearly cannot be anymore.

I also figure that your riddle was illuding towards somthing more abstract.. That is why I went for the EoEo or eachother guess.

Edit: Prehaps the palendrom signifies that both sides of the Catho/proto fence are about the same, and that is what matters? Prehapse that is what the "red" herring is as well.
