im training my montblanc as a mog knight and a gadgeteer and ive just beaten famfrit and montblanc has lower strength than nearly everyone else and even my mages can physically attack harder most of the time. how can i raise his strength?

Keep leveling him up as a Mog knight, it gives the most strength per level out of all the moogle classes.

it also helps to equip certain characters with Power Sash/Gauntlets. it's nothing really important for mages however. i believe it really depends. if i recruited someone who came to me as a mage and i change his/her job to a melee and equipped PS/G, it won't make much difference. their magic will always be higher than their strength.
