If you mean converting it from dvd/raw avi -> divx/xvid/... then yes. If you mean with winzip/winrar, well, let me ask you a question: does compressing your text files change the text?

What file extension does it have?
If you have file extensions hidden, it could simply look like a music file because the computer you're using has a music playing program associated with that file type.

If a video file is playing as an audio file in Windows Media Player, then it is a codec problem. How has the movie been compressed; is it DivX? Download <a href="http://www.headbands.com/gspot/download.html">GSpot</a> to identify the codec that is required; then Google for whatever it is you don't have.

Winrar is not a codec. It is a lossless archival format.
