What is Penance?

I know he is an optional boss, but where did he come from? Like Omega was a traitor monk that was banished, what's Penance's deal?

Actually... I have no idea. He's some random and insanely powerful toy that appears out of nowhere just like that.

hes probly some kind of summon. the aeons are different to the dark ones , they are a cimpletely different fayth. because when you fight a summoner you cant summon the aeon they have but E.G. if you are fighting dark ifrit you can still summon ifrit. so id guess that penance is a combination of all the defeated dark aeons.

I think I remember reading that it is the emotions of the dark aeons or their summoners or both that combine and manifest itself into a physical form. I'm not sure though. I'm american.
