A SSB Final Fantasy would make my life a whole lot happier... and a lot nerdier. I would play the game until I become the best Rydia player in the world! xD
Here's just an example of what she could be like:
Rydia:
A= Attacks with Rod for 3-4% dammage. 0,1 sec start up time, 0,5 sec total attack duration and 0,3 sec lag time.
A->= Strikes with Rod and creates a small bolt blast, 8-11%. 0,3 sec start up time, 0,7 sec total attack duration and 0,6 sec lag time.
A-^= Strikes upwards with Rod and creates a small bolt blast, 10-14%. 0,4 sec start up time, 0,8 sec total attack duration and 0,7 sec lag time.
A-V= Strikes with Rod downwards, making a light explosion on the ground for 7-10% dammage. 0,2 sec start up time, 0,5 sec total attack duration and 0,4 sec lag time.
B= Summon charge. Charges magical power and then releases a summon depending on how long you've been charging. Releasing a summon takes another 1 second. These are the summons:
Charge for 1 second) Chocobo: A chocobo flies around (like the pokemon Scisor) and pecks foes for 15-17% dammage and pretty weak KO power.
Charge for 2 seconds) Mist: Pretty much like the Ice Dog pokemon but weaker and lasts only 4 seconds + doesn't have the possible freeze effect.
Charge for 3 seconds) Ifrit: Pretty much like Charizard, but only the fire dammage thus no KO possibility + only 4 seconds duration.
Charge for 4 seconds) Shiva: Pretty much like the "frost bird pokemon" but weaker dammage and almost no KO power.
Charge for 5 seconds) Ramuh: Like Zapdos but weaker. The absolute maximum dammage done by this attack is 60%.
Charge for 6 seconds) Leviathan: Leviathan flies into the backround and then performs a gigantic wave attack with good reach that sweeps foes away from Rydia, doing about 40% dammage and has pretty good KO power.
Charge for 7 seconds) Ashura: Recovers 25-50% on Rydia.
Charge for 8 seconds) Bahamut: Flies into the backround just like Leviathan and then shoots a few fireballs in a wide area for about 20% dammage and then charges up and launches a Mega Flare where Rydia is standing (doesn't effect Rydia), doing 50% dammage and has extremely good KO power.
B->= Rydia shoots a bolt beam, doing 17-22% dammage and almost no KO power at all. 0,5 sec start up time, 1,5 sec total attack duration and 0,8 sec lag time. Great reach.
B-^= Casts float and becomes able to move in the air in any direction for up to 4 seconds. Rydia can't attack during float.
B-V= Exactly like Pikachu's Thunderbolt attack in SSBM, but faster + it knocks the enemy "downwards" instead of upwards. Oh... and no, Rydia doesn't yell "PIKA!!!".
Smash->= Strikes with Whip for 14-16%. Average KO power and good reach. 0,5 sec start up time, 0,9 sec total attack duration and 0,8 sec lag time.
Smash-^= Strikes upwards with a big bolt blast. Works pretty much the same way as Zelda and Mewtwo's up smashes. Does 8-22% depending on how good it hits. Good KO power. 0,8 sec start up time, 1,4 sec total attack duration and 1 sec lag time.
Smash-V= Strikes her rod at the ground, causing it to shake for a moment, throwing foes into the air for 10-14% dammage. Average range at both sides. 0,7 sec start up time, 1,1 sec total attack duration and 0,7 sec lag time.
Neutral Air: Rydia creates a whirlwind around her, doing 6-14% dammage with a little below average KO power. 0,2 sec start up time, 1 sec total attack duration and 0,5 sec lag time.
Forward Air: Rydia strikes with her rod, creating a small blast of dark energy with good KO power in the same sweet direction as Sheiks well-known and feared F-Air. 7-12% dammage. 0,1 sec start up time, 0,4 sec total attack duration and 0,6 sec lag time.
Back Air: Rydia swings her rod backwards, creating a med-sized flame. 9-13% dammage and very small KO power. 0,4 sec start up time, 1,2 sec total attack duration and 0,8 sec lag time.
Up Air: Pretty much like Zelda's up air, but slightly faster and slightly weaker. 8-14% dammage.
Down Air: Drill-Spike attack. Like Fox's down air attack, except that the last hit with the drill (if it the last hit connects) works like Falco's spike but slightly weaker and slower. 6-9% dammage. 0,4 sec start up time, 0,9 sec total attack duration and 0,9 sec lag time.
Grab: Good range, decent speed. Grabs with her whip.
UpThrow: Like Math's UpThrow. Chain-Grab possibility on a few fast fallers.
DownThrow: Like Mewtwo's downthrow.
ForwardThrow: Like Sheik's ForwardThrow.
BackThrow: Like Zelda's BackThrow.
Rydia's running speed is average, she's pretty light so her jump ability is very good. Her WD, Sidestep and Dodgeroll are all fast and good. The downside with being light is that she's easier to instant-KO.
Edit: Oh yeah... and her "Taunt" would be: Rydia shows her boobs and all male characters on the stage gets stunned for the rest of the match! OMG!

Rydia sounds slightly overpowered to me... even without the taunt. Anyways here's another character (I tried not to overpower):
Yuffie (no huge type bold for me):
Overall: A fast (I won't say move duration, assume fast unless otherwise said), light weight character. A physical character with a slightly better then average jump. During her attacks in the air she has complete control over movement (unlike say Link's down-a).
A: Attacks with boomerang for 5-6%. Doesn't hit enemy far.
A Smash: A slower more powerful uppercut type, 12-16%, hit reasonably far.
A->: Standard run up to opponent before a slash 6-9%.
A Repeating: Very quick set of stabs for 5% each, very damaging and easy to use for infinity combos, the high speed of this move makes it her most damaging tactic if she can use it.
A-^: Does a little hop as she swings the boomerang up. 6-9%
No A-^ Smash.
A-V: Slashes low with her boomerang 7-10%.
A-V Smash: Slashes the ground around her, very like ness's yo-yo going back and forth, it has good ability to clear enemies away and can hit them on either side. 10-13%
B: Quick toss of err... spare boomerang, very like Link's. 3-5%, it doesn't hit enemies far but knocks them down making it vary easy to cause difficulty by continually tossing before entering close combat.
B-^: She gets an extra jump (helpful for getting back on the field) and slash in an arc above her for 5-8% but it hits enemies far away with lightning power.
B-V: Stands still for 2 seconds, if not attacked Yuffie heals 20%.
Forward Air: Strikes Normally, 5-6%, doesn't hit the opponent at all far making it sometimes possible to do a repeating a combo in mid air.
Up Air: Swings the boomerang up, 6-9%
Down Air: Swings the boomerang slower then her normal attack (average speed) hitting an enemy straight down.
Grab: Very fast no range, grabs with hands.
Throw: Not far, low damage but very easy to combo with B-^ hitting much further.
Back Throw: A normal length back throw with reasonable damage.
Other: Yuffie has a good dodge roll, but a quite weak shield. And her taunt would probably be in better taste than Rydia's but immature.. dunno what.
I tried to make Yuffie a less overpowered character but high speed with those combo abilities are pretty strong.

I actually think going at it the way of Super Smash Bros. (and don't get me wrong, I love the game to death) wouldn't work. Basically, here's how I think it should work.
Take a 3D fighting engine that's a mix of Soul Calibur and some of the Street Fighter type games. A great deal of manueverability, but the moves should be simple. There should be enough to make things interesting and they should be decently easy to pull off, but not so utterly simple as to allow for little variation.
Let's take the equipment system Soul Calibur introduced and refine it. Just because this is going to be a fighting game doesn't mean we can't be heavy on the RPG elements.
Many Final Fantasy characters can use different types of weapons and armor. Many cannot. Make use of both of these.
Locke can use daggers, swords, and other such weapons. Let him have a wealth of all of them to choose from. You want a sword? Go for it. Want a dagger? That can be arranged.
Also, there are many ways to customize a character to have the kinds of stats you want. Final Fantasy VI had Espers, VII had materia, etc. etc.. This can easily be worked into the equipment and character building area.
For example, let's say I want to field my Onion Kid against my friend's Terra. I'm going to go over my Onion Kid and assuage the possible builds Terra can have and finally pick a Sage for a high magic build. We then move on to the button combinations where there are several combinations that I can set my moves (in this case spells) to. Then I'll move on to the items, where I can pick an assortment of equipment, robes, staves, rods, and the like. These further specialize my build.
Then we'll move on to Terra.
One of the major ways in Final Fantasy VI that you customize your character is through Espers. So in this game, we'll make it so that you can equip several Espers that give you certain stat boosts. So, say we want to give her a balanced build, we'll give her Starlet, Raiden and Tritoch (the game'd probably have inherent bonuses for all espers, and three would probably be the limit, although depending on how the game works there could be more or less).
We'll then go on to the moveset. Since it's balanced, about half on the magic and the reston offensive moves. This game would probably allow for some attacks like "Magic Sword" and the like, so we'd account for the fact that she could use her magic to enhance her attacks that'd be her special attacks.
Moving on to equipment, we could give her a good equipment set for magic and offense.
Then we'd take the super moves of both. For the Sage it'd probably be a lot of the higher level spells, and for Terra it could be things like her desperation attack, an Esper summon, or maybe even her Morph. Like with many Street Fighter fighting games, these moves would be accessible after charging a bar.
Given both of the builds, the characters should, if the game is made properly, be even in potential, but its up to the skill of the players and how carefully they construct their builds to decide who wins the match.
I'd love to see a game like this.
if there was a game like this i would go crazy!!
For a game like that I'd say mix the elements of Six and seven for character custimization. Since 6 had one esper per person, keep it that way. However the amount of Materia depends on the weapon like in seven, anywhere from 0 - 8 slots.
And a list of Character ultimate weapons.
Cloud - Ultima Weapon
Barret - Last Score
Cid - Mop
Terra - Atma Weapon
Sabin - Tiger Fang & Dragon Claw
Gau/Gogo - Make one of them the character that randomly becomes another in a fight
Cecil - Ragnorock/Crystal Sword
Kain - White Lance
Edge - Murasame & Masamune
Squal - Lion Heart
lets not forget characters from chrono cross and trigger
wow i want one.
haha also maybe...
-Ramza could do an attack called 'Call Army' to do massive damage
(like Aragorn's 'Call the Dead' in lotr the third age)
-Tidus could 'Call Blitzball Team' (army of thugs)
-If Cloud is fighting Sephiroth and is losing, Aeris will appear and be a shield
-The ultimate shield would be the "Northern Crater Barrier"
sparklystrobelights
*take me into the limousine
draw me into the disco scene
lookin cool like a fashion queen
shining bright like a laser beam*
- dallas superstars : | fast driving |
NEVER STAND STILL.
- Gatecrasher
I wouldn't use the 8 Materia 1 Esper system, and I'd make more variations for different styles like Junctioning and jobs, simply because it'd allow for better customizability in battle. Because the game plays out differently, it'd need different balancing rules and the like, so there'd have to be changes from the initial incarnations.
I like the idea BTV, and it might be better, but I'm don't play many fighter games and so I'd want something simple, fun and enjoyable to play multiplayer... but that's me.

I figure it could easily be made for anybody to pick up and play with the concept of "premade builds". Since most of the equipment, magic, and the like would probably be unlockable, I imagine every character'd have a basic moveset and build, and then you'd be able to unlock other preconstructed builds as it goes on. The customization'd only have to be for those who care to do it. And of course you could save your own custom builds.
