I just recently started playing FF8 and was wondering if the game cards (with 4 numbers) are necessary in moving the story forward or beating bosses. Also, what is the Card ability that GFs can use? thx

They aren't necessarily, but if you learn how to use the Card mod ability, they can be very helpful--and the card game is a lot of fun.
The Card command is used to turn monsters into cards.

yes i sugest you do play the card game. the card mod lets you turn your cards that you have goten into items the more rare the card the better the item
playing the card game bored me. i just modded the cards i won and didnt bother with much playin or turning many monsters to cards.

Well it's not really important to have the cards, but if you do manage to get all the cards, you get a feeling of achievment especially when you get EVERY card.
