I think the first reply to a private message I ever got was written with the reply on top, original message on bottom. Ever since then, I've always done it like that, figuring it was the normal way to reply to a PM. Besides, that's how I've always done it/seen it done in e-mails, and I sort of look at private messaging as a form of e-mail, so it just seems right.
