The wikipedia for Rikku says (SPOILER)they are secretly working for Maleficent because she was the highest bidder available. Which is something I didn't want to know until I played the game, but whatever. The Paine one says the same thing as Rikku's almost. I don't know what they mean by (SPOILER)'highest bidder available' though.
Well,Raven Nox, I believe they are (SPOILER)mercanaries. I also think they are similar to Yojimbo, that you will have to buy them so you can summon them. That is all guessing though.
Probably, seems a little out of character though, but that's the only thing I can think of.
Seems to me that they are like goods on Ebay where the highest bidder get to own them.

Remeber in X2 when you have to choose between giving the awesome sphere to the Youth leage or New Yevon. I think it's kinda like that, only you have to pay to have them give you that sphere.
