Well, in the game they tell u. When u go to the cave near Treno when ur with Vivi it shows his grandpa(wich is the same race as Quina). They tell u that he got his name from his grandpa. Nice Theory though.

If he got his name from his grandpa instead of other sources is what make the difference here.

Thorne Melcher says it literally means "to be alive". Also, a whole bunch of people have mentioned that the name may be "VIVI", or Roman numerals for "66". However, I don't like that for two reasons. First, Roman numerals for 66 would actually be "LXVI", and second, Vivi was a prototype, so his number would be "I" if any.

knowing the giver of the name is a very big factor in understanding what a name really means.and as i said,since it was quan who gave the name to vivi,it is really improbable that the name "vivi" would mean a certain black mage number,because quan barely even knows what vivi is and that black magi have numbers.

or maybe Vivi has a tatoo on his butt of VIVI (meaning 66 or some other number) and when Quan found him he was looking him over to eat him then found the tatoo and thought his name was Vivi
