I remember there being a way to get the mystery goo without fighting the mushrooms, but I've long since then forgotten. The white mushrooms are simple, if you can understand what they're after, I remember seeing a guide once they're pretty easy to come by.
Or the other blue mushroom's easy too, it just requires timing, and make sure to get your temporary characters away from it or they'll ruin it
