Nevertheless, cosplay, when done correctly, is insanely expensive, so plan to spend a lot of money.

If this is a costume party, I won't laugh or make fun of you. But if you plan on going to a fancy ball-like dance, well then that's a different story. Try googling patterns. Then you won't have to free hand it, which means it won't suck. That's all I can think of that hasn't already been said.
