Vaan - "Hey, you!"
Penelo - "Yeah, you! The one reading this sig at this very moment!"
Vaan - "Interested in playing FFXII International Zodiac Job system?"
Ashe - "But you have no knowledge of the Japanese language?"
Fran - "....We could help...."
Balthier - "That's right, Fran! Just click on Crossblades' thread on the very bottom of this signature and it will show you all license grid translations, magicks and tecks locations, and other changes that were made!"
Basch - "Don't forget though. Swap Magic is needed to play this game if you don't own a japanese PS2."
Vaan - "Also remember that if you played the original, you'll have an easier time playing the international version. We hope you enjoy the International Zodiac Job System experience. See ya then!"

I believe Butz was used in the original Japanese version of FFV. They may have changed it to Bartz in the North American PSone version because we would think his name would be rather silly. Then again, we may start opening up a topic of how to pronounce his name...either "Butts" or "Buttzy"....
It could be a translation thing also as to why in the PSone version they changed it to Bartz. The translated Emulator/ROM has it as Butz. I think I saw or read somewhere for the Japanese version that its Butz.
Try to think of it this way: In FFVI, Tina's name in the NA version is Terra by either a translation error or they edited it because in their opinion, Terra sounds better.
Um, I've only played the translated ROM, so I know him a Butz. However, I pronounce everything in my own special way, so "Butz" = "Boots".
Wait....how did the name "Bartz"/"Butz" come about? In my game, he didnt have a default name.Originally Posted by Cubster
As for Terra/Tina, In Japan, Tina sounds like a different exotic name (which is common in FF, I mean, what character has ACTUALLY had a NORMAL name? ) but in NA, Tina is a common girls' name. So they came up with Terra, which sounds exotic in NA. At least, that's what Wikipedia says......
As for my previous statement, I understand that in the EARLY FFs, there were normal names (Sara, Stella, Maria, Guy, Leon, etc.) but that was before FF was more storylined
PH33R teh Rainbow.
Taste the Rainbow
Well if you go by Japanese sounds, it would be pronounced Boo-t-z, because U is pronounced as an Oo sound...I've called him Butz (but pronouncing boots) since i played a translation i dled.Originally Posted by Xaven
Lenna was also changed to Reina for NA, as was Cara to Krile...I believe.
Here's a picture of a Japanese pewter figurine, and it says "Butz".
So Butz is his real name, no matter how embarrasing it sounds![]()

Batz, fools. But yea my anthology version doesn't give him a name at all. The fan ROM i played had him as Butz.
I usually rename him Tony or something, though.
Pronounced the same. 'Cause Aerith isn't pronounced using english phoenetics. So they spelled it Aeris so we'd pronounce it properly. Then everyone cried foul for some reason.Originally Posted by vampirepiggyhunter7
I won't even get into the Bartz/Butz thing. I didn't like the game anyway. But the sequal anime I loved. It hat Pretz
And Pretz is actually Pritz. It never ends!
I agree with Xaven on this one. The better name is "Butz," but only if it is pronounced "Boots."
"I'll get you, Eh! Steve, if it's the last thing I do!!!!!"
