I bought an N64 for Ocarina of Time.
I bought a Gamecube for Resident Evil.
However, I think Mario sells more systems. Gotta think of the young ones. They are the ones who buy most of the games. Personally, I buy systems for Zelda and Resident Evil games. If Mario is on the same platform then that's ok, but not necessary
I am tempted to buy a GameCube just to get Twilight Princess....
Links quests were more epic.

Mario....he's been there since the beginning, and he attracts a broader audience (Mario Kart for racers, SSB for fighters, Mario Party for party/whup friends games....all are lite versions of their genres, but still.....)

It's hard to say, I voted for Link but when it comes down to it, I think Mario has sold a bit more in the past.
Currently, I think Link has more selling potential.

Mario games have lost it. Sure, the party games are fun. But I want 2 player mario games again, like the good old days. Super Mario in 3D with two players would be awesome. Nintendo is being dumb and I dont know why...

Hands down, Link is the best. The only one of the Nintendo mascots I like. Mario, Samus, Donkey Kong, I dislike all of them. Only Link gomes out victorious in my book... Well, and Leon from RE4, if you consider him a mascot. The creepy merchant is cooler though.

Link, easy, I am buying a gamecube for the new zelda game! mario hit its peak at mario bros 3 for the NES. Zelda still kicks plumber ass!

They are both excellent choices. The first Mario and Zelda games are the first games I remember playing as a kid, so in a way, they got me into gaming. I'll have to go with Link on this one though, I grew up playing Link to the Past, and in part, that game helped me learn to read. Both are great characters though
I prefer teh hotness that is link but id say mario sells more
