The arena is in the Calmlands. You head towards Ghagazet, but follow the cliff. You'll come to an opening in the cliff, which is the entrance to the arena. If you've passed the bridge, you've went to far.

Beating Penence is the best way. I usually get 30+ darkmatter and a whole load of master spheres for beating him.

Not that that helps you of course.

If you create the arena monster Ultima Buster u get 99 dark matters

to create ultima buster catch 5 of every fiend in every area. though by the time you've done this, you could've got tidus' sigil 100 times over
