I am stuck in FFII, right at the beginning - once I go into the outside world, terrible monsters await me! I also see this airship flying around every so often - who's is it?

The airship flying around is just there for show. The only bad monsters at the start of the game are the Captains in Fynn and the ones on the way down to Mysidia. Stick around Altair while you build up a few weapon levels and buy some magic. That should be enough to see you through.

FFII is notorious for not holding your hand through the game. If you want to do something stupid, it doesn't even warn you that you're about to kill yourself. You pretty much just have to learn the hard way where you should and shouldn't go. If you wander too far, you'll get into a fight with a tough monster and probably die. There's a steep learning curve, but when you get the hang of it, the game really isn't so bad.
The area up in Fin has Ogres, avoid that area, the Wiz.Ogres are still tough even when you are supposed to go there, just fight Goblins and Hornets and remember to go to the inn whenever badly damaged at Altea/Gathea.
It's not a bad idea to train on them once you're strong enough for it, though. In fact, I generally like to train on the soldiers in Phin. You get lots of good items that way too.
Hmm..I've just beaten my first boss, gotta back to Altair. But, I'm going through the caves again, I'm kinda writing a mini guide.
I could have gotten further, but I've playing other stuff.

FFII was never welcoming. You get pwned at the beginning as part of the plot.
