colour problems
Iv just downloaded Betrayal at Krondor and tryed to do the setup for it and it tells me the the colour is failed (it says I should be useing 256 when I have Highest (32bit) ) and it says I can still run it but they would recomend running it in dos... now I have XP which doesnt suport this can anyone help? every time I click on the file my monitor blacks out (as if loading a program at full screen) and the it just goes back to the normal screen asif i didnt do anything, thanks for your help.
I've never heard of the game, but it's clearly very old if you need to run it in 256 colour mode.
Only thing I can suggest is running it in 'Compatibilty Mode.'
Browse to where the programs EXE file is and Right Click it. From the menu select Properties and then the Compatibilty tab on the next screen.
Check the Run this program in compatibilty mode box and select Win'95 or '98. Click ok and try running the program again.
If that dosn't work you can try using a boot disk to get to a DOS prompt and running the program from there. But if I remember correctly you'll only be able to access anything if the hard drive is formatted with the Fat32 file system. But i'm sure someone will correct me if i'm wrong.
You don't need a boot disk to run the dos prompt in windows.

That game is well over ten years old (awesome game). It's not going to work well, if at all, on a modern system.

Thats not proper DOS though.
Btw you can always made a bootable CD if you don't have an A: drive.
Did you actually try changing your colour depth to 256 colour?
Other than that, I'd try emulating a 386 environment, or a DOS emulator. Try <a href="http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1">DOSbox</a>, it's an easy to use DOS emulator.
Also try a program to slow down your CPU, like <a href="http://www.geocities.com/kulhain/turbo.zip">Turbo</a> or <a href="http://www.textmodegames.com/download/moslo.html">Moslo</a>. Turbo is very easy to use and more stable on Windows; for most old games, 70% of your current clock speed should be sufficient. Moslo has to be run from the command line. <a href="http://www.cpukiller.com/download.html">CPUkiller</a> is one I've heard good things about, but never tried, myself.
The game might be trying to use only the first 640KB of your RAM (conventional memory) because that is how many of the older computer memory architectures operated. Either that, or your current memory space is larger than the game is equipped to detect.
I would suggest what Face said, find a good DOS emulator and see if that helps.
