Did you actually try changing your colour depth to 256 colour?
Other than that, I'd try emulating a 386 environment, or a DOS emulator. Try <a href="http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1">DOSbox</a>, it's an easy to use DOS emulator.
Also try a program to slow down your CPU, like <a href="http://www.geocities.com/kulhain/turbo.zip">Turbo</a> or <a href="http://www.textmodegames.com/download/moslo.html">Moslo</a>. Turbo is very easy to use and more stable on Windows; for most old games, 70% of your current clock speed should be sufficient.
