I'm not sure what your problem is, as I don't use the java applet.

But try getting mIRC and accessing chat through that.
Once you have mIRC go to Tools and then select Options, type in the nickname you wish to use and then go to Connect, Servers. Then select Add and fill it in as follows;
Description: EoFF
server: irc.eyesonff.com
port: 6667

You don't need a group or password. Then press connect to server! Once connected type /join #eoff and you're done! Sorry I couldn't help with the java chat.
