PS3 pushed back to 2007 for the US?

"Cnet is reporting that a research report issued by Merrill Lynch suggests that the Sony PlayStation 3's American release may be postponed until 2007. From the article: 'The analyst firm proposed the idea that high costs and Sony's decision to use an 'ambitious new processor architecture--the Cell' is making it look like the company might not be able to meet its goal of getting the PS3 out in the U.S. this year.' Sony did not immediately respond to a request for comment." The official report (pdf) would also seem to indicate that the console will be somewhere in the neighborhood of $900 when it launches.

Now, we all know I'm a Nintendo fan... but O_O 2007.... and $900??? Sony must be going crazy!
They must know that anything over $500 will certainly hurt them a LOT in sales... heck even at $500 they wont be able to get a lot of low budgit famillies or parents getting gifts for their kids... (and at $500 Sony would still be loosing a lot of money on PS3...)
I can understand a 2007 release date, if they are still having problems with the Cell and BluRay... but still thats a disapointment...

I'm looking forward to the Revolution, and this will definantly help Nintendo get back up there in this next gen! (if this is article is true)
Still, I'd probably get a PS3... but O_o not for those prices... -_-

Money whores, the PS2 was about £300/$600 when it came out so I reckon that's the highest sony can get without being flamed and stuff.

I don't use the $ bucknut, I got mine for just over £300 about 3 months after it's UK release.

Exactly. This rampant speculation is starting to grate my nerves at this point. For starters, it says costs may be as high as $900, not the price. Fact is though, only Sony knows what it will cost to make the PS3 at this point, and if anyone honestly expects them to set a price that has them turning a profit on the console, then those people are totally ignorant of how the console market actually works. They won't sell it at a profit, just like they didn't sell the PS2 at a profit making price. The money to be made is in game sales, and that more than makes up for the losses companies are forced to take early on in a consoles lifecycle.

Here's a thought, instead of complaining about how expensive the console may or may not be, we wait for an official price from Sony? I've seen so many conflicting reports on how much it may cost to make the PS3, and different price points Sony has been considering, that I can say with absolute certainty, all these analysts have no idea what Sony's going to do, and neither do we gamers. To use an example, back around E3 I believe it was, IGN reported that amongst other things, Sony was considering the idea of a PS2 launch price level for the PS3. That would certainly go against the commonly held belief that it will be ungodly expensive if they do it. Even if they don't, the fact they would at least consider it shows they're very well aware that this thing can't be too expensive. Give the guys at Sony some credit, they didn't get to the top of the console market by being total morons.

Seriously, saying "Sony must be going crazy!" and putting any faith in this report is pretty presumptous. Obviously, the concert will cost more to produce than it will be sold for. They make the money up in software sales. There's no way the PS3 will cost 900 dollars, unless there's some really mind-blowing stuff we don't even know about it. Sony is just as intelligent as the next company, and they know damn well that they need a middle-range price to stay competitive. I heard recently there's a rumor, supposedly from an "insider," that it's coming out in September, or somewhere around there, of this year. Does this rumor have any more credibility than what you've posted? No, not really. Instead of throwing more gas on the fire, we should just wait for some, y'know, accurate information.

Thats about £ 500 in the UK, wooaahhh thats alot of money.
