Thread: The Exorcism of Emily Rose

Default The Exorcism of Emily Rose

I just recently got this movie off of Netflix and man it was pretty good.

The movie has kind of a clever approach and takes kind of a neutral stance on the subject and lets the person watching decide for themselves on what is really going on.

It was infact inspired by a true story from a girl in Germany back in the mid 70's. Though I will admit that they did add a few things into the movie that didn't seem to be apart of the real case. And the catholic church even admitted that the girl suffered from severe epilepsy instead of demonic possession.

But nonetheless the movie is still pretty good and has some real creepy moments.

I am not sure about what real exorcisms are like. But if they are anything like what was depicted in this movie it would be enough to scare the bejesus out of me.

I fell asleep during this movie. That's not saying good things for a supposed horror film.
Edit: Yes, the Catholic church she had Epilepsy, but of course they're going to say it's anything but possession. Though, I don't believe it was either.

Originality is good, kids.

I don't think its main focus was to be a scare show (although they did try to add moments in here and there that might make you jump out of your seat).

I think its main focus was to present the court case that ocurred though and let you decide for yourself rather or not you think it was possession or something within her own mind. And also more importantly rather or not you think the priest was guilty of negligence or had good reasons for doing the things he did.

The original exorcist show was intended I think to mainly just be a scare show. This one was not though I don't believe.

I also looked into the real case a bit (I like doing that after I have seen movies that were supposedly based on true stories to see how much was actually true and how much was added in or embellished).

In it Anneliese Michel (the real girl that the movie was based off of) did have wild fits of rage and would physically harm herself and others and would also infact talk in all those creepy voices that they had Emily do in the movie. But there was no self levetation like Emily did and there was no telekineses (sp) like there was in the movie.

Here is an article that talks about the real story

I haven't seen the movie, though I think my family has it on DVD. I've read the story that happened in the 70s, though. I think it was an article on some online newspaper. Didn't it happen in Germany? Of course they'd add things to the movie, but the people I know that saw it say it wasn't scary.

I'm not going to watch it because I'd get scared anyway.

Hate to say it, but after all the hype they made about it in the adds, I was expecting this really freaky horror flick. >> It was nothing but the court case and flashbacks of Emily screaming stuff in latin. Though, it was a good movie anyways, non-horror put aside.

My friend dragged me to see it. I was nice enough not to tell her that that stuff scares the out of me...Anyways the part that really bothered me was the barn scene where she speaks in Hebrew, Arabic, Ancient Greek, and stuff. I was like O__O; The movie was good and beside the fact that it scared the heck out of me I really did enjoy it. ^__^ Great I am on my Spring Break right now...and the Rez is pretty empty...*gets creeped out*

I saw it and laughed till I cried when the old paranoid dude got hit by that car. Definently one of the best moments of the movie.

Whenever I hear of that film, I always think of a quote from Father Ted when the Passion of St. Tibulous opened on Craggy Island and Bishop Len Brennan visits them:

"Now, his holiness has had it banned! But because of some bloody loophole in the law the thing has opened up on this goddamn dump."

I've only watched bits and pieces of it. And I've also heard that the real girl it was based off just had epilepsy, which would explain the spasming. But the best thing to do for epileptics is just to wait until the fit is over and try to give them some space so that no one around them is injured as they fuss about (unless it's unnaturally long lasting in which case, an ambulance should be called). It's not such a big deal, but in this case, it ended up involving the church and going to court. Maybe this shows that there was something para-normal going on with Anneliese Michel.

Just a thought. Maybe I should get around to watching the movie.
