    Over the Rainbow

When all the world is a hopeless jumble
And the raindrops tumble all around
    Heaven opens a magic lane
When all the clouds darken up the skyway
There's a rainbow highway to be found
    Leading from your window pane
To a place behind the sun
Just a step beyond the rain

Somewhere over the rainbow way up high
There's a land that I've heard of once in a lullaby
Somewhere over the rainbow skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream
    Really do come true

Some day I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
    Away above the chimney tops
    That's where you'll find me

Somewhere over the rainbow blue birds fly
    Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can't I?
If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow
    Why oh why can't I?
Is this not one of the (if not the finest) song ever written? The longing, hoping, wishing for something that could never be. I definitely consider this as one of the finest songs, lyrically, ever written.

I've heard many versions of this song, and some were mostly music and no lyrics. I don't know who sang it first. Would you reommend one by a certain artist?

I used to love this song. LOVE IT.

And then recently I went to the funeral of a girl who went to my high school who died of cancer and her best friend sang this song for her at the end of the funeral. Now, in my head, this song will forever be linked with death and sadness.

This song reminds me of when I was ten, and in the inter-school choir.

Now I have to stop listening to Pink Martini so I can sing this song, and then I'll listen to Gomez or something so I can pretend I'm not a wuss.

Most certainly. Judy Garland is the originator of this song and it belongs to her. She first performed it in the 1939 movie, The Wizard of Oz.

Edit: I am so sorry Miriel. <3
