When the game was in early production, a lot of people speculated that the third companion to Yuna and Rikku would be Lulu.

Lulu (along with maechen) pwns all. I still like Paine, but Lulu is just better.
The whole you are evil thing just got old.
I think the reason lulu isnt a main charecter is becasue shes the wrong generation. The whole of spira is being taken over by the young'uns after the old maesters screwed everything up last time. By having the young people desperate for change and searching for old spheres it add slightly more depth to the story.... not much but a bit. lol
Its not bad. I really like Lu, But Paine gives the story some Mystery. I think they should have both Paine and Lulu.

"Yuna is more active and beginning to show her feelings more openly, and Rikku has been like that from the beginning. With the two being a lot more talkitive, there had to be someone with a calm, cool demeanor who could put a halt to their execessive chattines. If it were Lulu in that role, she would have completely shut them down, and the story wouldn't have advanced at all. But in Paine's case, she she's someone who can remain neutral, keep the others focused, and help the story carry on together with these two girls."

As much as I didn't like Paine, and as much as I love Lulu, I think it was a good idea not to have her as the "third" party member or whatever. As that article up above already said, her personality just wouldn't fit with those two other girls. She'd be too mature and dark for X-2. It would have been weird, man. WEIRD.
