    Default Your Computer Specs

Okay, so I just successfully built my first computer. And I'm very proud. It's amazing what you can put in when you do it yourself...

Anyhow, what is your computer specs?

    Here's mine:

    AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ (Dual Core)
    2GB of PC3200 RAM
eVGA Geforce 7800GT CO SE 256mb
    700gb (300+400)
    Some huge Antec case

Anyhow, I freaking LOVE this beast. I've never had a great computer before, but now I can finally say I do. I click things and they open... fast. Half-Life 2 plays at 140 fps. Happy am I.

The question is, will I look at this thread in 3 years and cringe at these specs?

When we got our old PII 7 years ago, people commented on how we would never be able to use up 12 GB of disk space.

    Fun times

Oh and yes, that comp is pretty awesome. So awesome in fact that I'm not going to post my specs...

    Lets see...

    3.0 Pentium4
    1 GB RAM
    128 6600GT graphics card
    16x DVD drive
    4x DVD burner
    80 GB harddrive

My computer may not be top of the line like it was close to being about 2 years ago when I got it but it isn't weak at all and I have yet to feel like I must replace it.

I do want to get a new hard drive but I think I will wait 2 more years when new technology should be a year old. They are coming out with new ways to write to harddrives to get more data out of it which has not been done in forever.

The one I am currently using (at home, I am at work on a dell 260 atm ) is 5 years old.

    2.4GHz (no HT) PIV
80GB drive (built with IDE raid (DSP)(2 40's)- i hate raid now )
Intel PEB boars, riddled with driver errors, and still legacied out (hate intel)
512 ram (Seriously need an upgrade)
    GForce 4 TI 4400 2x AGP (boo!)
Cd burners, cd drive, dvd drive.

I think the most important thing that I learned, and am larning as I prospect building another, is that now is usually and awkard time to buy, as the dual core is going to be getting upgraded bussing specs etc in the spring. Doesn't make it a bad time, just a good time to hold off if you can. Though in holding off, you find yourself like several guys I work with (waiting like years to build).

My personal advice is, go AMD, Nvidea, and go with overkill on ram if you can swing it. No intel, processor or boards, as I have had and seen many have overheating porblems on the northbridge. Make sure you get lifetime warenty ram, and keep all recipts. Write down your windows keys, and make damn sure you put the washers between the case and motherboard when you screw it in. These are there to stop conductivity. Of course, read all insturctions as well.

I am currently building a slightly better system (k lot better) for a personal client for 370 dollars total. I get my parts from www.ZipZomFly.com and highly reccomend em over newegg - etc.

I am looking at dropping $2,000 on a computer soon, and then building another $1,200 machine for my wife. My current computer would then become a prospect server ~ thats down the road about 2 months though

Congrats Cid, Building your own machine (or having someone who knows how, help you) is by far the most machine for your buck, and a great saticfaction in knowing you built it. Glad to hear it went swell for ya!

On another not Cid himself quoted me, if I was a school girl i would probably feignt, which I may do anyway.

Edit: Okay, its either this or another one. They are almost exactly the same comp with a few minor differences, the only real difference is the DDR 2 ram, and since thats what I origanlly thought it was it could be that one. Dang you best Buy!

After closer ispection its the one with DDR-2, since the speakers were also different and that one matched up. And it still can play MPGEG. So I'm going to do a happy dance.
