Thread: Greatest Final Fantasy Ever

I heard a rumor that if you hate one Final Fantasy enough it will morph itself into your favorite.

Anyway, I liked VI well enough, but I played it right after Chrono Trigger and that kind of made it seem..less impressive I think. So between 7 though X-2, X-2 I liked a lot but it's at the bottom, 7-9 I like equally, and I like X juuust lil' bit better...so X is my favorite ^_^ Aren't you all glad I gave such a detailed explanation? I read your minds and saw how much you cared, so I had to post this whole paragraph.

DeathKnight: stop jumping on everyones posts and disregarding their opinions. There is absolutely no need for you to contradicte whatever it is they are saying, especially in thread. Taking it to PM is fine (if they want your to), but next time do it before you make your second post. Also, watch your language.

I'm a newbie here, very interesting thread. I had lots of fun reading all your opinions on this magnificient series. I have been a fan since 1991, when I first played FFIV with a friend of mine, been hooked ever since.

I think every game in the series has great and memorable moments, I don't think any of them is purely bad, even FFX-2, has some good points...not many but still. Of course, I have my favorite, like everybody else. So here's my little opinion of the subject.

    Final Fantasy
A true classic, a revolution in the RPG realm, very entertaining even today. 9 out of 10

    Final Fantasy II
Kind of dislike the level building system but the story is great. Love the music, just don't know why. 7.5 out of 10.

    Final Fantasy III
Good game with great character, new class systems, very interesting overall but not many memorable moments makes this one one of my least favs. 6.5 out of 10

    Final Fantasy IV
My first encounter with the series, legendary cast, very good story and music, classic moments and one of the greatest RPG's of the Super Nes Days makes this one a near masterpiece. 9.5 out 10

    Final Fantasy V
A change of pace, jobs sytems is interesting, love it. Good music, enjoyable story and great playability overall. Somes nice moments. 8 out of 10

    Final Fantasy VI
Everything about this game is sublime. The story, music, moments, characters, I love every seconds I play it. This is my favorite game of all-time, it had a huge impact on my life when I was a teenager, I will treasure it forever. Yes, the world is square. 10 out of 10.

    Final Fantasy VII
Another masterpiece, another revolution in the game world. Endless hours I spent playing this game, being obsessed about it. Did I forget to mention my little darling, my video game love, miss Tifa Lockhart! Loads of memorable moments, The last great masterpiece of the series if you ask me. 10 out of 10.

    Final Fantasy VIII
I think I'm in the minority here but this game, althrough being good in itself,it did not the same impact on me as the others. I never got into it like somes others did. Many great scenes but overall, a dissapointement for me. 7 out of 10.

    Final Fantasy IX
A return to classic FF mythologies, largely underated in the RPG fan community, this one is a real winner. Very beautiful game, the story is captivating, everything about it has a special feel to it but still, it misses a little something to make it even better. 9 out of 10.

    Final Fantasy X
Voices...to hear voices in a final fantasy game was really something when this one came out. It took some time for me to get into it but when it did, WOW, what a ride. Many great moments but some scenes are just way too long, not enough gameplay. Still, the good points are there, a superb piece of work that will live on in the hearts of this series. 8.9 out of 10.

I don't include FFX-2 here...don't think it deserves the title "Final Fantasy"...

    Final Fantasy XI
I am not into online gaming, never played it much. Waiting for XII...Just can't wait!

So that's it. Thanks for reading.

FF6 and FF7 are mine - I really can't wait for XII to come out for PS2 though.

but IX's above the rest. with IV - VIII following behind it. X's a good game, don't get me wrong, it just doesn't have much story.

You mean I'm gonna end up as a rabid FFVIII fan and start mooning over Rinoa? The horror! *dies*

*sigh* no one appriciates FFII. Though when did I get the "FFII Fangirl" rep? Not that I'm not, mind...
But hey, you like IX (my other favorite), so your cool with me.

If I see Vivi's face, I will say FFIX is the greatest game ever.

I just like FFVII because it was my first FF, deserves an honour.

Final Fantasy X is my favourite so far, it's also the first FF game I ever played.

Ill have to stick with IX, mainly because I really liked it and it was the first FF that I was able to complete uninterupted. X and X-2 come real close though.

So I get to go over them all? Hey, why not.

FFI: I can see how it improves over the games of its era. Great music, revolutionary in-battle movements (for the time, mind you), and sheer re-playability if only to try different party combinations and figuring out how the time-loop works for sure. ****

FFII: Also pretty revolutionary. ("Dramatic RPG", it says in the instruction booklet for FFIII.) Granted, they hadn't really gotten it down perfectly..they needed a few more games to get the hang of it. It's system takes some time to get used to (if you're used to the other games), but really isn't hard to abuse at all. Started surreal crystalline outer space final dungeon trend that appears in alot of RPGs. Also introduces Chocobo (singular), and Cid. ****

FFIII: Think FFI. Now multiply it by three and add in one-dimensional characters from FFII, and put that in the same game. Yeah. Pretty awesome. Memorable music, and the first job-system game. Introduces many FF mainstay jobs, and Moogles. Generally considered one of the more difficult games of the series, if only for some frustrating moments.*****

FFIV: The series becomes more advanced. In addition to characters with more than one dimension to them, and enhanced music and graphics from the Super Famicom, introduces another series mainstay: ATB. However, no new forms of customization are implemented. Has a traditional level-up system like classic RPGs. Also has Zeromus, who is actually somewhat of a challenge. (If only that you can't figure out what the hell he actually is...) Bio has an awesome sound effect.****

FFV: Getting more advanced. Enhanced backgrounds. Uses a job system like FFIII. The main character is a pimp. This game is so intense that every location you visit will explode, be attacked, get ruined, transform, or be sucked into a black hole. (I'm half joking.) Also introduces a true 'superboss', although there was Death Machine before it. ****

FFVI: First really modern FF. Not only does it have an industrial time period, truly complex characters, and nifty religious allusions, it also set out concepts re-used in later FFs and RPGs in general. (So basically, religious allusions. And angelic final bosses. Just wait until FFVII, oh boy.) Enhanced environments, backgrounds, music, and sprites. Extensive use of Mode 7 graphics. However, pretty buggy. (Granted, you'd have to do most of them on purpose, but there are alot of bugs.) Introduces 'Desperation Attacks', which grew into Limit Breaks later in the series. One of the optional characters is a past governer of Illinois, or so I've been told. *****

FFVII: First FF in 3D, and on the Sony Playstation. Also the first worldwide FF, perhaps making the series more 'mainstream', if you wanted. Revolutionary, regardless of if you hate it or not. Materia system offers more customization than ever before, if only for destroying any uniqueness the characters had in battle. Environment is even more modern, moving on to ~21st century technology. Also introduces spiffy FMV sequences, and Kitten Sith as a playable character. Yes, Lego people are pretty funny. ****

FFVIII: Even more enhanced backgrounds, and graphics. Junction system allows customization; but horribly broken. (They really needed to look it over a few times, seriously.) Quistis and Zell playable characters. One of my personal favorite soundtracks. 'Special Attacks' are the Limit Breaks of this game, and they're pretty broken too. Also has Laguna, the coolest FF character ever. ****

FFIX. Imagine a bucket of nostalgia. Now drink it. DRINK IT! DID I SAY YOU COULD STOP?! Yeah. FF references up the hooha, and a more traditional environment system. We can equip armor again. Yay. Abilities are also learned from equipment, which was pretty cool. Nothing too new, but that was the whole point. And you all knew you liked Kuja. Admit it. *****

FFX: First FF on the PS2. True 3D environment, not pre-rendered.Island environment. (Okinawan, if you want to be specific.) This is probably why Japan ranked it #1, if not because they seem to like RPGs anyway. Gives us the Spere Grid as a customization system, pretty innovative, to be sure. Also fairly abusable. Also introduces frustrating mini-games, like Blitzball, Lightning Dodger, and those goddamn butterflies. ***1/2

FFT: Imagine the job system. Now put it on crack. Taking a break from active time, going to a more tactical system of battle. (Hahaha.) Not to mention that all main characters will betray you/be betrayed/are evil/any combination of those three. While daunting at first, the customizations system can offer godlike status, and of course, Orlandu. (I mean, you could just play with him and win easily, y'know. Seriously.) ****

Anyway, I couldn't possibly pick a favorite, though I like FFIII and FFVI the best. And I like lists! Lists are fun. Kitten Sith needs his own casino spin-off game with Laguna.

I like V-X alot, I really can't pick a favorite. Sometimes I could say VII, other times IX, then X, but you just can't beat how great the games V and VI were and they're all better for different reasons.
