Started playing WoW. I've made 4 characters so far just to get a general feel of the game. So far, I can understand why some people would jump ship from ffxi to go to WoW. I was playing, gaining exp&money literally within seconds of logging in. Since starting I've been able to log on for 30min -1hr and actually feel like I've accomplished something, I just can't do that in FFXI. For people who don't have a lot of time to play WoW obviously > FFXI. But other than that, FFXI is still a far superior game. Even ignoring my longtime FF fanaticism, any hardcore gamer(ie the ones that have time to be hardcore) is going to prefer FF to WoW. However, that doesn't mean that WoW isn't incredible, because it is. There are quite a few things I've noticed that I wish FFXI would incorporate into their game, and though I loathe to say it, FFXI developers are either being lazy or very idiotically stubborn about keeping some things in FFXI the way they are when it seems the entire world knows there's a better way to do it.

It's been hard to accomplish anything in FFXI lately b/c of my school/work schedule but I got blm to 61(static pt as BLM RDM BRD COR WAR NIN...refresh please, avg 10mp/tick) and whm to 42 and can finally tele myself around. Dynamis continues to get more and more boring as cities are almost a joke now. I remember my first few times in dynamis-windurst(with a different ls) when we couldn't even make it past the "Death House" without wiping, but now we double clear windy and {Flee} around an empty Dynamis-Windurst. Once the challenge is gone, it's not as fun anymore. I'm kind of hoping they add Dynamis-ToAU zones, even though ToAU already has assault and Salvage 'n' what-not. Or if SE would add new loot to the existing zones that would spice things up a bit. I'm excited to see the Far East atm too, especially seeing the work the developers have been putting into the game lately(finally._.) They kind of proved it to me w/ the Pallas change. I was the final straw ^_^. Popped Pallas with a friend(who's not a good soloer) and a group of ppl killed the bat and waited for Pallas to charm me then beat the crap out of me, then tried to steal Pallas from my friend, who managed to kill it somehow. We called GM merely to ask if it was ok to kill people whom Pallas has charmed and -literally- 30 minutes later SE 'fixed' Pallas. I sympathize with the developers to a certain extent. Really it's not the developers' fault that the game degenerates, it's the players. The majority of gamers are selfish arrogant morons, and they spoil it for everyone else. WoW has those same fools, but fortunately it seems that the way WoW has set up the game, it's harder for those idiots to spoil the game for other people. I don't expect SE to change their game, and I wouldn't want them to. It's a shame, though, that their wonderful game is ruined by idiots.

Yeah, I really don't think they need to remake FFXI in WoW's image. They are different games for different types of gamers. What SE needs to do is listen and stop being lazy. Why did it take them 4 years to start doing something about RMT, fishbots, Ulli, windower, (you get the idea)?

I think they could've saved a large portion of their players if the players had any indication that they could have contact with SE. The devs in FFXI are on a pedestal far away and unreachable whereas the WoW devs talk to the players and fix things quickly. There is a connected feel and doesn't make you feel like you're taken for granted and ignored. The people who run WoW seem to actually play their game and understand the mechanics of it. This is not the case with FFXI. Remember the Sage Sundi interview a while back?

    paraphrase:
Q: So how do you feel that new XP areas are overcrowded
    A: They are?

Q: How do you feel that kings have ridiculous amounts of competition for claims?
    A: They do?

Q: How do you feel about RMT owning Ulli in sky 24/7?
    A: Wut?

SE finally seems to have stepped up. They are dealing with problems more in real time and are fixing the problems that have plagued the game for a long time. I think if they just took a more serious role in development and listening to their players (that play the game more than the devs and can come up with amazing suggestions for solutions) then all of the other problems would fix themselves.

I really can see both sides of the coin though. If you are hardcore and have 6-8 hours a day to play, WoW would probably bore you to tears within a few months and FFXI would make you feel more accomplishment. However, if you have less time or want to feel less of a slave to progress WoW will give you more for less.

Don't feel bad about starting several toons. I think I probably made about 10 characters (even got a few near 30) before my wife and I finally settled on a realm and stuck with our current characters. If you feel like rolling horde and want to come join us you would be welcomed. We can help you with bags and instances and other such things. We're on Darrowmere.

Now for progress ^^ Got my Druid to 34 and my Priest to 31. Managed to get a rare drop from a rare spawn in Razorfen Kraul that I'm pretty excited about. Also got two pretty awesome piece of gear for my Paladin out of a chest I opened on my Druid. Just need to level him up high enough to use them.

I'm hoping to be able to keep both FFXI and WoW. FFXI for when I know I have time to do something, or have plans, and WoW for in between classes or while I watch a movie or a game or something. WoW is great too because it's easier to just walk away, if someone calls or @ dinner or w/e. FFXI sucks you in. While you're playing, anything else happening is an intrusion. If I have to choose one in the end it will probably be FFXI, just b/c I've already put in so much work. I can't stand the thought of losing it all.

That's the killer about FFXI. It takes so much work to accomplish anything that it makes it almost impossible to walk away and abandon the immense amount of work you put into it. I also like the ability to walk away at a moment's notice. Even when running an instance if something comes up most players don't flip out when you say, "Hey I have to go." It's easy enough to replace someone or to 4 man the rest of the instance and instances don't take the immense amount of preparation that even a simple XP PT in FFXI takes.

My wife and I were discussing what affects the balance between the two games that allows so much more balance in WoW and not as much in FFXI. In WoW each job has multiple potential roles they can fill.

Druid can tank, DD, or main heal (really needs resto spec though)
Paladin can tank and main heal
    Warrior can tank and DD
Shaman can tank, DD or main heal
Priest can DD or main heal

The list goes on. If you need a healer, half of the jobs in the game can do it (Priest, Druid, Shaman, Paladin). You need a tank, half the jobs in the game can do it (Druid, Paladin, Warrior and too a lesser degree Shaman and Hunter [with pet]). You need damage? Well pretty much everyone else can do damage and many of the already mentioned jobs can also fill that slot if not doing their other duties. Crowd control? Pretty much everyone has some form of it.

In FFXI. You want a tank... you have NIN or PLD. You want a healer... RDM, WHM, SMN maaaaybe BLM. You need crowd control... BRD, RDM, BLM. So now I've mentioned about 1/5th of the jobs. You want damage... everyone else as well as Ninja. You are a PLD and want to do two things? Too bad. You can tank. You can't effectively main heal or put out serious damage. This is the same case for most of the jobs. What you can do is ALL you can do and sadly for the vast majority of jobs that is do damage... there's only so much room for DDs in the world and when DDs are the majority you end up narrowing it down to which one is better (and there almost always a best). WAR, MNK, SAM depending on what you're doing.

The community grabs hold of these limitations and blackballs everyone who isn't the best of their category, which is sadly more than half of the jobs in the game to varying degrees.

So I have accomplishments. I blew up my video card. I dunno what happened but it made a loud pop and when I checked one of the capacitors blew off of the card. Dunno if it was overheating (not OC'd) or what. Gonna have to pick up a new vid card tomorrow.

I did manage to get my Druid to 36 and put on some pimp new gear (that I made nonetheless). Also did some battlegrounds and earned myself some boots. I never knew how fun PvP could be... crazy fun. I haven't been playing my alts too much. I've been really getting hardcore on the crafting with all of them and will likely start a new alt in the not-too-distant future to cover some other crafting needs of mine.

Well, I suppose not all capacitors are of equal importance.

\o.o/ Full drops ftw. 45 minute fight!

Long story short: this isn't our first kill of Hydra but last time we attempted it, it kept spamming Phys Shield at 1%... the three times we fought it the same night and ended up quitting. LOL just didn't want to die that day and now we went back for some RETRIBUTION!

NINJA EDIT: PLD/NIN for the mfw!

Ive been out of FF for about a month now and FINALLY tomarrow I will be able to get back into the game. So hopefully I can get GK2 and maybe the rest of the monk AF done within this week. Ill keep it updated.

During my absence of FF I have been playing WoW and IMO im not impressed. To me its not so fun running from quest to quest and on top of that I got suckered into joining a PvP server so at least 3-5 times a day I get killed by a ?? horde. The higher lvls have nothing better to do than pick on lower lvl people and make their day horrible.
I could rant and rave about wow vs ff all day but this is not the thread..... a thread just for wow vs ff should be made.......

I played several PvE servers before being talked into trying a PvP server and definitely prefer a PvP server. I don't really get ganked all that often, but there is a little extra thrill in being able to participate when it comes to that.

EDIT: A little clarity for those that don't play WoW... Only the opposing faction can attack you. It's not a free-for-all mess. However, groups of high level people will often attack small towns (of which there are quite a few in WoW). Keep in mind that the guards will come the defense of the towns so it's not like everyone in their teen level in Crossroads is getting raped by 70s. The 70s still have to deal with the numerous level 65 elite guards and other various town NPCs.

Also dying isn't the same as in FFXI. You do not lose XP and when killed by another PC you don't lose durability on your gear either. The only downside is having to walk back to your body from a nearby graveyard, which takes a hell of a lot less time than waiting for a raise in FFXI or trying to get back to where you were after HPing.

As far as PvPing people of your own faction, you can do that by challenging people to a duel which they can easily decline.

Speaking of PvP, I've been doing a lot of battlegrounds lately. Wickedly fun. I got enough marks and honor to buy myself some new boots from Arathi Basin (similar PvP to Dominance in Unreal Tournament). Also being doing Warsong Gulch (CTF) which has been grueling. Lot of really good alliance teams. Too bad most of the junk I want comes from Warsong.

Pvp sounds like it would be fun at first but get annoying later.

PvP seems to get less tedious as I level. There are more and more people I have the level advantage over so I don't get ganked as much. It is sometimes annoying to be on a quest and get ganked though. However, as long as they don't corpse camp me it's only small inconvenience.

WoW is a good game. I just can't bear it anymore. 4 month were more than enough, but again, I'm not the classy MMORPGer.

I'm not sure if I'll buy any addional licences after the demo month of FFXI either though. It sure is fun, but my heart lies in SinglePlayer.
