Dammit, I'm maybe halfway through the game, and up this point I had thought that he was her gay best friend. I don't know why they gave me that first impression, but there you go. And of course, Ashe/Balthier hadn't even crossed my mind because duh, he was gay. Sigh. This thread has changed my entire outlook on the different relationships between the characters.
