I saw Tifa Lockheart (from Final Fantasy VII) defend herself from some Heartless that surrounded her. I thought; don't you need a weapon to fight the heartless? How can she fight heartless with only her hands?

The heartless are people without hearts. The closest comparison in the real world i can come up with, for a human without a heart, is a frat guy. so, using frat guy logic, the most potent weapon to use in order to completely fry their brains would be...

She can fight heartless without a weapon cus her hands and feet are her weapons and that's all she needs

Except her name was created before KH was thought about. Though it is a nice coincidence, and maybe more incentive to put her in the game.
Keyblades, gauntlets, and female breasts seem to all be combat options against the Heartless.
