Disgaea 2

Now that people have stopped worrying about that "Kingdom Hearts II" title, it is time to draw attention to the REAL reason people should be hoarding money this summer.

And that reason is Disgaea 2.

As my soul officially belongs to Nippon Ichi, this is a game I have been waiting for... essentially since I heard about it. It's been released in Japan, and is slated for release in America around August 19th, if memory serves (which it probably does).

Why is Disgaea great? Aside from Laharl-sama, of course.

While obviously not the kind of game that appeals to everybody, being a big fan of the turn-based strategy games I enjoyed the class and character aspects of Disgaea immensely. The geo-symbols are an interesting twist to the game (although a master with them can easily rack up a 1,000+ reaction that wipes out just about every enemy on the board), and the throwing concept is also quite good.

Furthermore, the characters are quite loveable and the humor in the game I found to be quite good.

I'm pleased to see a return to the grid after the problems inherent in Phantom Brave/Makai Kingdom's system (being able to jump and move around with that much freedom prevents things such as blocking enemies and protecting your mages with formations). I'm not necessarily averse to the circular movement, but I like the grid movement system a lot. It's simple, but it works.

The pupil system is also a good way to get your characters to learn good abilities and the like, and is something I definitely plan on abusing to its fullest in Disgaea 2.

Really looking forward to this game. Honestly it's the only strategy game from Atlus/Nippon Ichi that I like. I just couldn't get into Phantom Brave or Makai Kingdom. I think it was just the crazy story with great characters that made it such a good game in my book. "I've attained super speed by training in 100-ton boxers!!!". Truely great stuff
