The story is great, the villain is just plain evil and awesome, the characters are very likable, and all of them have equal reason to join together and take down the Empire.

Because tehre's no main character, tehre's nobody who walks around with a very Big Sword who doesn't care about things at all... That's a first plus. The closest thing you have in FF VI that you have to somebody who says "whatever" is a black Ninja who slit his mother's throat for a nickle.
But, honestly, just about everything makes FF VI better than VII and VIII. I wouldn't say IX, because IX is the best. VI was the first to have 'many' forms of technology. That's kinda against my liking, but at least it wasn't so bad as in VII.
The characters are all great, KEfka is just wickedly awesome and the story is overal very good. There is some great music in the game as well. The gfx are very 'WOW', and in my humble opinion, better than VII's. It's just a good game, but I would not say it is better then ALL the other Final Fantasies, but it certainly comes close.
What's the point? He'll just immediately disregard any arguement anyway, hating on the graphics or some other pointless thing.
Anyway, I think FFVI is better than the others, because it's what made the foundation for the modern FFs of today. True, many FF mainstays were made in the earlier games, but FFVI truly defines what FFs are like today. It was the first FF with a truly complex customization system, the first FF with a deep story with truly deep character development, and it had very good graphics for a SNES game. (It also used those Mode 7 graphics more often than FFIV or V.) It was also the first game to have a 'shocking revelation' kind of plot twist, not to mention (SPOILER)the world getting fried. And of course, the 'crazy nihilisitic mofo who becomes a god and has the awesome battle music as a final boss' that they can't seem to stop re-using.

Oh, so I guess you can't read books without pictures because you can't see the characters?
I personally much prefer 2D graphics than 3D. For one, I started FFVII a couple of days ago, and I can't get anywhere at all without crashing into something. 2D is much simpler.
Plus, the newer games just get easier by the minute. You can finish the entire first disc of FFVIII in a day.
