More like story wasn't really a big a deal. RPGs and such were only enjoyed by a select crowd, not like how they seem to be more popular today, I would think. What I mean is, since video games weren't taken seriously as a form of entertainment, it didn't really matter if it had a storyline as detailed as some novel. Or something. :P That's what I'd think, anyway. Although I'd say FFI had a story better than most games of the time, although I think that FFIII is indeed a much better game, although they follow the same formula.
